Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric: India Debut Confirmed for April 2026

Mercedes-Benz is set to redefine its entry-level luxury segment in India with the debut of the highly anticipated CLA Electric in April 2026. This move is a cornerstone of the brand’s aggressive “12-model rollout” strategy for the year, signaling a pivot toward a more streamlined, EV-centric portfolio.

A Strategic Successor

The upcoming CLA Electric isn’t just a new model; it represents a major shift in Mercedes-Benz India’s hierarchy. The CLA nameplate, which was discontinued in its combustion form in 2020, returns to serve as a replacement for three current models:

  • The A-Class sedan (ICE)
  • The EQA and EQB electric SUVs

By consolidating these into the new CLA, Mercedes-Benz aims to offer a singular, high-tech entry point into the brand.

Performance and Range

Internationally, the CLA EV is built on an 800-volt architecture, allowing for ultra-fast charging. In India, it is expected to feature an 85kWh battery pack.

  • CLA 250+ (Expected for India): Features a rear-wheel-drive setup with a 268hp/335Nm motor. It boasts an impressive WLTP-certified range of up to 792km.
  • Transmission: In a rare move for EVs, the CLA uses a two-speed transmission to optimize both low-speed acceleration and high-speed efficiency.
  • Charging: Supporting DC fast charging at up to 320 kW, the car can theoretically add 300km of range in just 10 minutes.

Design: Modern Meets Aerodynamic

The CLA Electric retains its signature “four-door coupe” silhouette while adopting futuristic EQ design language:

  • Exterior: It features a blanked-off gloss black grille with illuminated star patterns and a connected LED light strip across both the front and rear. Flush door handles and 17- to 19-inch aero-optimized wheels help it achieve high aerodynamic efficiency.
  • Dimensions: At 4,723mm in length and with a 2,790mm wheelbase, it offers a more spacious footprint than the outgoing A-Class, including a 101-litre “frunk” (front trunk) for added utility.

Tech-Loaded Cabin and Safety

The interior is inspired by the higher-end EQS, featuring a heavy focus on screen real estate:

  • Standard Setup: A dual-screen layout with a 10.25-inch driver display and a 14-inch central touchscreen. A third screen for the passenger is available as an option.
  • Safety: The vehicle recently secured a 5-star Euro NCAP rating (2025) and comes equipped with Level 2 ADAS, eight airbags, and a 360-degree camera.

Market Positioning and Pricing

When it arrives in April 2026, the Mercedes-Benz CLA EV is expected to be priced starting at approximately ₹60 lakh to ₹65 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, it will go head-to-head with rivals like the BMW i4, Kia EV6, and the Tesla Model Y, positioning itself as a premium yet accessible electric sedan for the Indian luxury buyer.
